With the talk of Google fiber coming to Charlotte, the BUZZ seems to be all about speed. I wanted to touch on the topic of current internet speeds and the future of internet connection speeds. The current speeds we have now are based on megabytes. Google Fiber is positioning themselves to bring gigabytes to Charlotte, that is just the beginning. The record for speed over a fiber line is a petabyte.

NEC and Corning, in January 2013, using a multi-core fiber, transmitted 1.05 petabits (FULL Story) ...WOW!!  The NEC team said at the time that its achievement indicated that transmission of one petabit per second – capacity equivalent to sending 5,000 HDTV videos of two hours in a single second.
